People who are not good candidates for traditional LASIK
(laser insitu keratomileusis) now have another alternative. LASEK
(Laser-Assisted Sub-epithelial Keratectomy) is now available at
Grossnickle Eye Center. For patients with strong concerns about the flap
used in LASIK, significant dry eye, previous history of filtering blebs
for glaucoma, scleral buckles, people involved in high impact activities
or with very thin corneas, LASEK may be an option.
Similar to PRK, LASEK does not require the use of a microkeratome or the
creation of a deep corneal flap. During LASEK, an epithelial flap just a
few cells thick is created. Beneath this very thin flap, the Excimer
laser reshapes the cornea just as it does with LASIK.
LASEK eliminates the potential for the traditional flap and
microkeratome related complications, however; there is an increased
recovery time compared to LASIK. You will have some variable discomfort
for the first 24 to 48 hours and be required to wear a bandage contact
lens during the first 4 days of recovery. You will also be asked to use
steroid drops for one to three months as opposed to one week with
traditional LASIK.
During your evaluation your doctor will present all of your options and
help you decide which is the best procedure for you.
